Warm milk trickled over her fingers and ran in small rivelets down her arm towards her elbow. "Damned eyedropper".... she muttered under her breath as she picked up another small screaming lump of fur from the laundry basket. Barely two weeks old, it peered at her out of it's one open eye with an expression of complete helplessness. The four lumps left in the makeshift nest wailed like sirens serving only to remind her of the throbbing, pulsating headache that all of this had induced. "These aren't even my cat's kittens, why am i doing this?" she thought as the next one loosed it's bladder on her jeans... she sighed and trudged off to change clothes. "I should be getting a tan, reading, making brownies, doing something, ANYTHING but this....." as she rounded the corner the intensity of the yowling increased by ten-fold... "just one left" she mumbled as she picked up the splotchy brown and black one and set it on the newpaper covered feeding area. It mewed softly as it ate, it's forefeet and tail trembling with anticipation. She couldn't help thinking it... it was cute... and it needed her. What a horribly loveable combination. Mission accomplished, they had all been fed and put back on the heating pad, but alas, the crying persisted. "I CAN"T TAKE THIS!!" she declared and went upstairs to get a towel. Only one thing left to try. She returned and took the basket into her room then one by one, loaded the small fuzzballs into the newly created towel pocket and then laid down on her bed. At once, the noise subsided. Ten little ears lay pressed flat against the beating of her heart, the pulse lulling them to sleep. She laughed softly to herself, then sighed and thought "What if all we really need in life is a warm and loving heart to snuggle up to at night?" She sighed again "It's a thought..." |
